Standing at 183 meters (600 feet), Xiangshan is a relatively small mountain but packs a big punch in terms of panoramic views and tourist attractions. Its name, meaning "Elephant Mountain," comes from its resemblance to an elephant’s silhouette. The mountain is home to a well-maintained hiking trail that spans approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles), leading adventurers to its peak. The trail is moderately challenging, making it accessible for both beginner hikers and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

At the summit, visitors are greeted by the famous Six Giant Rocks, a cluster of massive boulders that serve as observation platforms and unique photo spots. These rocks are particularly popular among photographers aiming to capture Taipei 101 from a breathtaking angle, especially during sunset or when the city lights twinkle at night.

How to Get to Xiangshan

  1. Western Trailhead (Closest to Xiangshan Station)
    • Start Point: Exit 2 of Xiangshan Station (Red Line).
    • Directions: Walk south from the exit, passing through Xiangshan Park. You’ll find the trailhead adjacent to the Daitiandian Lingyun Temple. This entrance is the most popular route to the summit.
    • Travel Time: Approximately 10 minutes on foot from the station to the trailhead.
  2. Eastern Trailhead (Houshanpi Station Access)
    • Start Point: Behind Songshan Fengtian Temple.
    • Directions: From Houshanpi Station (Blue Line), take a short walk south to Songshan Fengtian Temple. The trailhead is located directly behind the temple.
    • Travel Time: Around 15 minutes on foot from Houshanpi Station to the trailhead.
Both trailheads provide easy access to the summit and allow visitors to experience the beauty of Xiangshan from different starting points.

Where to Eat Nearby

After a refreshing hike, you might want to grab a delicious meal or unwind at a café. From the western trailhead, walk back to Xiangshan Station and take Exit 2. The café is a 5-minute walk from there.

Whether you’re hiking for fitness, photography, or a break from the city, Xiangshan is an excellent destination that offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. With its proximity to Chang Gung University and easy transportation options, it’s a must-visit spot for students and travelers alike. You can also take the 967 Public Bus from Chang Gung University Bus station to Taipei Main Station and then just take a Red line to Xiangshan Station.
