What is STEM?
STEM stands for Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, usually used when talking about academic programs in colleges.What is OPT?
OPT is short for Optional Practical Training, which is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1(international) student's major area of study. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization after completing their academic studies.What is STEM OPT?
Similar to regular OPT, the STEM OPT lets students stay in the US and have a chance of working up to 12 months. The difference is after the completion of the 12 month OPT, STEM students are eligible to apply for a 24 month extension, which will allow students to work a total of 36 months in the US.What are the benefits of applying for STEM OPT in the US?

How to apply for STEM OPT
- Apply to a school in America:
- Search for schools certified by the U.S. "Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)" here.
- Choose an Eligible STEM Program, please refer to the list of eligible programs here.
- Contact the international office or review the website of the school of your choice international office to confirm that the school you applied to, provides services to assist students with the STEM OPT process.
- Prepare your documents and apply to the school
- Visa Application:
- After being admitted to the school and receiving the I-20 (example provided in Attachment 1), you can start applying for the F-1 visa.
- Please visit the AIT website for the process of applying for an F-1 visa.
- OPT Application:
- During the final semester before graduation, apply for OPT through the school's international office.

- STEM OPT Extension:
- Apply for the extension through the same school where you applied for OPT.
- Start the application process one to three months before the expiration date.
