Tuberculosis Prevention and Health Screening
☆ To safeguard the health of our faculty, staff, and students, and to enhance the promotion of tuberculosis awareness as well as information on prevention and screening.
I. Understanding Tuberculosis
Pulmonary tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is primarily transmitted through the air. When individuals with active pulmonary tuberculosis cough, sneeze, or speak, they may release airborne droplets containing TB bacteria, which can lead to transmission.
When Mycobacterium tuberculosis enters the body, it can become encapsulated by granulomatous tissue in the lungs. If the immune system is strong enough, the bacteria can be controlled and do not cause active disease. This balanced state is called latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI).
Latent tuberculosis infection has no symptoms and is not contagious, meaning it cannot be transmitted to others. However, when immunity is weakened, the infection may progress to active tuberculosis, which can then be transmitted to others.
Pulmonary tuberculosis is a preventable and curable disease. With early detection and regular treatment, most patients can be successfully cured, and the risk of transmission can be effectively reduced.
II. Symptoms to Be Aware Of
If you experience any of the following symptoms lasting more than two weeks, please seek medical evaluation as soon as possible:
a.Persistent cough
b.Cough with sputum or blood-tinged sputum
c.Chest pain
d.Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
e.Fever, night sweats, or fatigue
III. Tuberculosis Screening and Contact Tracing
Tuberculosis screening enables early detection and timely intervention, helping to protect both individual health and the overall campus community.
If recommended by a physician, notified by the University or public health authorities, or identified as a close contact of a confirmed TB case, please cooperate with the required examinations and follow-up measures, such as a chest X-ray or latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening.
IV. Campus Prevention and Personal Protective Measures
a.Maintain a regular routine, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet to strengthen immunity.
b.Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and wear a mask when necessary.
c.Keep indoor spaces well ventilated and avoid prolonged stays in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas.
☆ Once diagnosed with active pulmonary tuberculosis, individuals should follow medical instructions and complete the full course of prescribed treatment regularly. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, most patients can be successfully cured. Cooperation with follow-up health monitoring and management measures can effectively reduce the risk of transmission to others.
☆Tuberculosis prevention and control require collective participation. By staying vigilant, following medical advice, and completing treatment, we can work together to reduce transmission risks and safeguard campus health.
