The latest "World's Top 2% Scientists" list, compiled by Stanford University with data from Scopus, was released in September 2025. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields according to the standard Science-Metrix classification. It evaluates researchers based on several key metrics including citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). Our university has achieved the following distinctions: 35 faculty members have been selected as part of the "World's Top 2% Scientists in Career-long (1960-2024) Achievements". 49 faculty members have been recognized as "World's Top 2% Scientist in 2025". In 2005, she received her habilitation in Virology, and in 2006, she completed her training as a clinical virologist. In 2008, she was certified as a clinical investigator by the Austrian Medical Chamber. Since 2018, she has served as a consulting expert for the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, she advised the Federal Government as a member of the National Crisis Commission. In 2022 and 2023, she joined the group of Samuel Landry as a guest researcher at the Department of Biochemistry, Tulane University, USA. At the Medical University of Vienna, she is Professor of Viral Immunology and Deputy Director of the Center for Virology. She also leads the diagnostic laboratories of the National Reference Center for Human Arbovirus Infections and the Reference Center for HIV. Her main research focuses on immune responses to viral infections and vaccinations, medical virology diagnostics, and the epidemiology of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in Austria. Assoc. Prof. PD Karin Stiasny, PhD Assoc. Prof. PD Karin Stiasny studied microbiology at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Vienna, and received her habilitation in Virology at the Medical University of Vienna in 2005. In 2012, she was appointed Associate Professor under the new career track program at the Medical University of Vienna. She was also a visiting researcher at the Institut Pasteur in Paris (Structural Virology Unit, Felix Rey). At the Center for Virology, she leads her own research group and oversees the scientific-technical work of the arbovirus diagnostic laboratory as well as the National Reference Center for Human Arbovirus Infections. Her main research areas include the molecular biology and immunology of flaviviruses, particularly structure–function relationships of envelope proteins and immune responses to infections and immunizations, as well as virus diagnostics with a focus on arbovirus serology and neutralization assays of enveloped viruses.
