Curriculum and Learning Pathways

The Department of Industrial Design at Chang Gung University aims to cultivate professional designers equipped with both technical expertise and ethical responsibility. Our educational philosophy emphasizes the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, complemented by a mentorship-based teaching approach that guides students’ academic development and professional growth.

In response to the needs of national economic development and the growing demand for higher-quality product design, the department encourages students to actively participate in international design competitions, helping to enhance the global recognition and positioning of Taiwanese design. In addition to training professional designers, the department also actively nurtures design researchers.

To achieve these educational objectives, undergraduate students are expected to develop the following core competencies before graduation:

  • Humanistic awareness

  • Interdisciplinary innovation

  • Application of emerging technologies

  • Global perspective

  • Artistic literacy

These competencies guide both the curriculum design and teaching implementation within the department.

For graduate students, the program emphasizes the development of research capability, innovative thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and human-centered perspectives. The master’s program offers three distinct graduation pathways:

  • Design Research

  • Design Practice

  • Design Creation

The department fosters a learning environment that emphasizes interdisciplinary innovation, emerging technologies, artistic development, humanistic values, and international perspectives. Students first build a strong foundation through courses in design knowledge and technical skills. They then apply these skills through hands-on design projects and studio-based learning, which help them develop individual strengths and professional specialties.

Students are also encouraged to pursue the five-year integrated Bachelor–Master program, which provides an accelerated pathway for advanced study. Through this program, students are guided to develop their design innovation capabilities and leadership skills, enabling them to apply design thinking to innovative applications and future development.
