Mission
Established in 1994, the Department of Industrial Design at Chang Gung University has developed as a small yet distinctive design program committed to cultivating independent, socially responsible, and globally minded design professionals.Building on a strong foundation in industrial design, the Department is advancing toward Intelligent Design × Value Creation as its future direction. We believe that design in the age of AI is not simply about adopting new technologies, but about understanding people, identifying meaningful problems, and using design and technology to create better products, services, experiences, and systems.
Our education therefore integrates human-centered thinking, design creativity, emerging technologies, interdisciplinary learning, and practical implementation. Students are encouraged to understand people and real-world contexts, explore possibilities through design and technology, and transform ideas into meaningful value for individuals, industry, and society.
Use Technology · Understand People · Create Value
Department Characteristics
Integration of Theory and PracticeThe Department emphasizes the integration of design knowledge and hands-on practice. Through design studios, project-based learning, prototyping, and practical exploration, students develop professional design skills while learning how to apply design methods and knowledge to real-world problems.
Intelligent Design and Emerging Technologies
In response to rapid developments in artificial intelligence and digital technologies, the Department is progressively integrating AI, digital tools, interactive technologies, and emerging technologies into design education. Students learn not only how to use new tools, but also how to apply them appropriately throughout the design process while maintaining human judgment, critical thinking, and responsibility.
Human-Centered Design and Value Creation
Design begins with understanding people. Students learn to investigate human needs, behaviors, experiences, and contexts, and to transform these insights into meaningful design opportunities. Beyond functionality and aesthetics, students are encouraged to consider how design can create user, social, and market value through products, services, and experiences.
Interdisciplinary Learning
As part of Chang Gung University’s College of Management, the Department provides students with opportunities to connect design with knowledge and resources from management, engineering, information technology, and medicine. Interdisciplinary learning helps students develop broader perspectives and the ability to address increasingly complex design challenges.
Global Perspective and Social Responsibility
Students are encouraged to broaden their perspectives through international exchange, workshops, competitions, and cross-cultural learning. At the same time, the Department emphasizes humanistic awareness, social responsibility, and sustainable thinking, encouraging students to consider the wider impact of design on people, communities, society, and the environment.
Core Competencies
Undergraduate ProgramThe undergraduate program develops five core competencies:
Humanistic Awareness and Care · Interdisciplinary Innovation · Application of Emerging Technologies · Global Perspective · Artistic Literacy
Together, these competencies support the Department’s educational direction of Intelligent Design × Value Creation, enabling students to understand people, use technology thoughtfully, integrate knowledge across disciplines, and create meaningful design outcomes.
Master’s Program
The Master’s program develops four core competencies:
Research Capability · Interdisciplinary Competence · Innovation Capability · Humanistic Awareness
Graduate students may pursue their professional development through design research, design practice, or design creation, exploring complex issues through research and design while integrating human needs, emerging technologies, interdisciplinary knowledge, and value creation.
Research and Development Directions
The Department’s teaching and research encompass areas such as human factors and ergonomics, user experience, affective design, interaction and digital media, medical and well-being design, design management, design research, and product and service innovation.Building upon these established strengths, the Department is developing Intelligent Design × Value Creation as an integrating framework for future education and research.
Intelligent Design explores how AI, digital technologies, and emerging technologies can expand the possibilities of design while maintaining a human-centered approach.
Value Creation examines how design can transform human needs, technological possibilities, and creative ideas into meaningful value for users, industry, society, and future ways of living.
This direction reflects our belief that technology expands what designers can do, while human understanding and design judgment determine what is worth creating.
Department Facilities and Space
The Department occupies approximately 6,473 square meters (about 1,958 ping) of teaching, research, administrative, and fabrication space within the Management Building. The administrative and research area, located on the sixth floor, includes departmental offices, faculty research laboratories, and graduate classrooms.
The undergraduate teaching area, located on the B1 level, includes design studios for different year levels as well as specialized workshops and laboratories supporting model making, material processing, digital fabrication, media production, and design presentation.
Together, these facilities support the Department’s emphasis on learning by doing, allowing students to move from ideas and digital exploration to physical prototyping, testing, and design realization.
Teaching Spaces and Equipment
The Department emphasizes learning by doing and provides professional studios, workshops, digital tools, and fabrication facilities that support students throughout the design process—from concept development and visualization to prototyping, testing, and presentation.Students have access to facilities for digital fabrication, woodworking, metalworking, plastics processing, printing, photography, digital media, audiovisual production, virtual reality, and exhibition. These resources enable students to explore different materials and technologies and transform design concepts into tangible products, prototypes, experiences, and systems.
Rapid Prototyping and CNC Studio
The studio supports digital fabrication and rapid prototyping with facilities including 3D printers, laser engraving and cutting equipment, computer workstations, and interactive display systems. Students learn to translate digital models into physical prototypes and explore computer-aided manufacturing as part of the design development process.
Post-production Media Studio
The studio supports audiovisual production, digital storytelling, and immersive media. Facilities include computer workstations, professional video and audio equipment, digital recording systems, display equipment, cameras, and virtual reality systems, enabling students to develop multimedia content and explore digital and virtual experiences.
Metalworking and Woodworking Studios
The workshops provide a range of professional fabrication equipment for woodworking and metalworking. Through hands-on practice, students learn about materials, manufacturing processes, craftsmanship, safety, and prototype construction, strengthening their ability to transform design concepts into physical outcomes.
Printing Studio
The Printing Studio provides facilities for screen printing and other print-based processes. Students explore the relationship between graphic expression, materials, production techniques, and creative experimentation through hands-on printing activities.
Plastics Studio
The Plastics Studio provides equipment such as vacuum-forming and sandblasting machines, enabling students to explore plastic-forming processes and produce models, prototypes, and design components.
Photography Studio
The Photography Studio supports product, portrait, and design photography. Professional cameras, lighting equipment, backgrounds, and related facilities allow students to document their work and develop visual communication skills for design presentation.
