The Department of Computer Science and Technology's team won second place in the Taiwan region of the 2026 Harvard HSIL Hackathon, qualifying for the global finals.
On April 11th,the ICBigBoss student entrepreneurship team from the Department of Computer Science and Technology at our university distinguished itself in the Taiwan region of the "2026 Harvard HSIL Hackathon,"winning second place and qualifying for the global finals. They will represent Taiwan at Harvard University, competing against outstanding health technology teams from around the world.
The Harvard HSIL Hackathon, now in its seventh year,is dedicated to connecting young people and professionals worldwide to address the challenges facing the medical and public health fields and to nurturing health technology teams with innovative thinking and entrepreneurial potential. This year,Taiwan joined the global competition network for the first time, becoming one of its key partner locations. This year, over 14,000 people registered globally, with more than 150 teams participating in the Taiwan region. Each team had two days to develop, design, and propose a health innovation solution, ultimately selecting only two outstanding teams to represent Taiwan at Harvard.
ICBigBoss was led by Lin Yi-zhen,a senior undergraduate student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.Team members included Chen Yu-chi,a second-year master's student in Computer Science and Engineering;Li Zi-jie,a senior undergraduate student in the same department;and Tu Yi-jing,a senior undergraduate student in the Department of Economics at National Central University. The team was mentored by Professor Wei Zhi-da of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at National Central University. After two days of intensive competition, the team's innovative and practically applicable eye health management technology proposal won the judges' approval.
The team's entry,RTiC(Real-Time Intelligent Eye Care),is an eye health monitoring and training platform based on a smartphone.Unlike traditional ophthalmic instruments, which are expensive, heavy, and inconvenient to carry,RTiC incorporates dynamic ripple technology for visual fatigue detection and provides personalized eye muscle training.Furthermore, the system can also detect the user's blink frequency and half-blink ratio in real time through the phone's front camera, further performing comprehensive indicator evaluation to provide more comprehensive and objective eye health monitoring results.
Currently,RTiC has obtained invention patents in Taiwan and the United States and has been approved by the Human Trial Board(IRB)of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for clinical trials. The team also invited Dr.Keng-Kuo Lin,Director of the Refractive Surgery Department at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital,to serve as a clinical consultant, assisting in improving the feasibility and completeness of the system's clinical application.
The global competition will run from the end of April to the end of June, with the final competition expected to be held on the Harvard University campus. At that time,ICBigBoss will showcase its research results to international investors and academic experts, demonstrating the innovative energy of Taiwan's health technology and showcasing the research strength and entrepreneurial potential of Chang Gung University students on the international stage.
