The Department of Medical Technology was first established in 1989 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. The original teaching objective was to train competent medical technologists. In 1996, the division of Radiologic Technology was added to this department. In 2004, the division of Medical Technology became the Department of Medical Biotechnology and Laboratory Science whereas the division of Radiologic Technology became the department of Medical Imaging and Radiologic Sciences. Before that, in 2002, this department started to recruit Master’s students. In 2007, the department of Medical Biotechnology and Laboratory Science started to recruit doctoral students through the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences.

Feb. 1988

Prof. Ysan-Zon Liu came back from the US to become the first departmental chair. (1989. 3- 1997. 7)

Sept. 1988

With the approval of the Ministry of Education, this department started to recruit students.

Sept. 1996

This department started to have two divisions: the Division of Medical Technology and the Division of Radiologic Technology.

Aug. 1997

Prof. Daniel Tsun-Yee Chiu became the departmental chair. (1997. 8- 2003. 1)

July. 2002

Graduate Institute of Medical Biotechnology was established and in the same year started to recruit our first class of Master’s students.

Prof. Daniel Tsun-Yee Chiu became the Director of this Graduate Institute. (2002. 7- 2003. 1)

Aug. 2002

Prof. Err-Cheng Chan was appointed the deputy Director of this Graduate Institute and the division Head of Medical Technology. (2002. 8- 2003. 1)

Prof. Daniel Tsun-Yee Chiu was appointed the Dean of Student Affairs.

Feb. 2003

Prof. Err-Cheng Chan became the Director of this Graduated Institute and the chair of this Department. (2003. 2- 2004. 7)

Associate Prof. Shin-Ru Shih became the Division Head of the Division of Medical Technology. (2003. 2- 2004. 7)

Aug. 2004

This department changed its name to the Department of Medical Biotechnology and Laboratory Science. The Division of Radiologic Technology became the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiologic Sciences.

Prof. Shin-Ru Shih became the departmental chair as well as the Director of this Graduate Institute. (2004. 8- 2009. 7)

Prof. Err-Cheng Chan became the vice president of Formosa Biomedical Company. (2006- 2010)

Aug. 2006

Prof. Daniel Tsun-Yee Chiu was appointed the Dean of Research and Development. (2006. 8- now)

May, 2007

Prof. Shin-Ru Shih became the Director of the Research Center of Emerging Virus. (2007. 5- now)

Aug. 2007

This department started to recruit Ph. D. students within the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences.

Aug. 2009

Prof. Shin-Chi Lai became the Departmental Chair as well as the Director of this Graduate Institute.

Sep. 2009

Prof. Daniel Tsun-Yee Chiu was appointed the Director of Molecular and Clinical Immunology Research Center. (2009. 9- now)

Aug. 2010

The Department and Graduate Institute jointly became the Department of Medical Biotechnology and Laboratory Science with undergraduate and master’s programs.

Aug. 2011

Prof. Daniel Tsun-Yee Chiu was appointed the Director of Healthy Aging Research Center. (2011. 8- now)
