Chang Gung University Organic Chemistry Laboratory Safety Rules

  1. Smoking, eating, joking, making loud noises, sleeping, using mobile phones, and listening to music are prohibited in the laboratory. The use of charging devices in the laboratory is also banned.
  2. When entering the laboratory, wear closed shoes, long pants, a lab coat (with buttons fastened), glasses or goggles, a face mask, and tie your hair back in a ponytail. Sandals, shorts, and skirts are strictly prohibited. Those not in compliance will not be allowed to enter the laboratory.
  3. Familiarize yourself with the locations and usage of fire safety equipment, emergency eyewash stations, and emergency showers in the laboratory.
  4. Students not enrolled in the class are prohibited from entering the laboratory without permission from the instructor.
  5. Do not perform experiments without the instructor's approval to avoid potential accidents.
  6. Before beginning an experiment, thoroughly understand the principles, steps, apparatus, and precautions of the experiment. If unclear, do not proceed. Laboratory chemicals and equipment must not be taken out of the lab.
  7. During an experiment, at least one member of each group must stay in the laboratory. Do not leave the lab unattended to avoid potential dangers.
  8. Do not use broken glassware to avoid injury, and notify the instructor for a replacement.
  9. When handling heated containers, always wear heat-resistant gloves to prevent burns.
  10. Volatile chemicals and plastic items should never be placed in an oven, heated, or brought near a flame to prevent accidents.
  11. Before using instruments, read the operating instructions carefully. If you do not understand something, ask the instructor immediately. Do not operate the equipment on your own to avoid damage or accidents.
  12. When using a heating plate, do not set the power to the maximum. Ensure that the power cord is fully extended to avoid melting the insulation, which could cause short circuits or electric shocks. After use, wait for the heating plate to cool down and coil the cord before returning it to its original position.
  13. When taking public chemicals, check the label for the correct name, and queue at the designated area to take them. Do not move or carry them back to your workspace, as this may prevent other students from using them. After use, return them to their proper place and ensure the bottle is sealed to avoid contamination and danger. Do not use blades or metal objects directly on the lab table. If damage occurs, compensation will be required.
  14. Handle chemicals carefully to avoid spillage. Do not spill chemicals around, and avoid contaminating the electronic balance or desk surfaces.
  15. If you accidentally spill chemicals or get injured, rinse the affected area with large amounts of water, inform the instructor for preliminary treatment, and proceed to the health office for further care.
  16. When preparing strong acid solutions, slowly pour the acid into water to prevent accidents.
  17. Do not dispose of broken glass, gloves, or other solid waste randomly. Place them in designated areas. Dispose of acidic, alkaline, and organic waste liquids in the correct waste containers following the classification procedures to prevent environmental contamination.
  18. Keep the laboratory bench tidy during experiments. After completing the experiment, each group is responsible for cleaning all used equipment, the workbench, the sink, and cloths, returning items to their proper locations, and turning off gas and water taps. Submit your observation records and raw data to the teaching assistant for grading. Before leaving, check if any personal items are left on the bench, move stools to the side, and have the teaching assistant check and sign off.

By signing this, you confirm that you fully understand the safety rules explained by the instructor and teaching assistants and will follow these rules during the laboratory experiments. You are responsible for any violations.
