In 2022, the Department of Electrical Engineering introduced a 5G base station testing and teaching system, which includes a 5G O-RAN private network base station, engineering test phones, and 5G software-defined radio platforms. Our research focuses on 5G/6G communications, artificial intelligence, AR/VR smart sensing, and other related fields within the 5+2 industries. This equipment represents a standalone 5G mobile communication standard system, allowing faculty and students to engage directly with cutting-edge fifth-generation communication systems to develop the latest 5G communication concepts. The equipment complies with the 3GPP's 5GNR enhanced mobile broadband scenarios and uses the standard open-source O-RAN architecture. It is a leading 5G mobile communication system in academia and industry in Taiwan, capable of integrating multiple phones, augmented reality, and IoT applications. The software-defined radio platform can also be used to develop 5G baseband and RF-related baseband algorithms. Besides teaching and research, this equipment can also support B5G/6G industry-academy collaboration projects.
Our laboratory also provides teaching, research, and industry training in 5G/B5G mobile communication technologies for faculty and students, hosting exchange activities to promote the application of 5G/B5G technology. In September 2023, Chang Gung University was approved by the Ministry of Education for the "Next-Generation Mobile Communication Technology Talent Cultivation Program," receiving a grant to establish the "B5G Next-Generation Mobile Communication Demonstration Base." The program aims to collaborate with the newly established 5G laboratory and biomedical sensing laboratory in the Department of Electrical Engineering to further expand the existing 5G network into a campus private network. This initiative focuses on developing new-generation B5G smart campus and smart medical vertical applications, utilizing cloud technology, artificial intelligence, network optimization, and edge computing to continuously research and innovate B5G technologies and applications. These technologies and applications will be integrated into the curriculum, providing teaching materials and experimental platforms, offering students more opportunities for internships and advanced studies, and maintaining close ties with the industry to cultivate more professionals in next-generation mobile communication areas.
