A total of 3 outstanding individuals have won the 2026 Academia Sinica Scholar Award. Professor Huang-Yu Yang's study, published in Nature Metabolism, revealed the critical role of asparagine in immune regulation. He further demonstrated that restricting this metabolite can reprogram CD4⁺ T-cell fate, promoting Treg differentiation while suppressing pathogenic Th17/Th1 cells, thereby effectively ameliorating autoimmune diseases such as lupus and colitis.Through integrated single-cell and epigenetic analyses, the team established a comprehensive map of how metabolic stress shapes immune tolerance and used AI to develop novel asparagine synthetase inhibitors.This research pioneers a new direction in restoring immune tolerance through immunometabolic intervention and holds strong innovation and translational potential. We are honored that Professor Huang-Yu Yang from the School of Medicine/Institute of Immunology and Translational Medicine is the first recipient from a private university to receive this award. A total of 7 outstanding individuals have won the Outstanding Paper Award of the 35th Wang Ming-Ning Awards. Assistant Professor Han-Po Shih established a fully human single-B-cell cloning platform in this study and successfully isolated 19 monoclonal antibodies from patients with mycobacterial infection underlying anti–interferon-γ autoantibodies. This work clearly elucidated how these autoantibodies inhibit the biological activity of interferon-γ in patients, and further revealed that those with strong neutralizing capacity hold therapeutic potential for treating diseases driven by aberrant interferon-γ activation. This year's workshop, themed “From Concept to Innovation: Transforming Clinical Problems into Feasible Solutions,” aims to guide participants in understanding real clinical needs and applying design methodologies to develop innovative and practical solutions. — Event Information — Venue: BB112R, B1, Management Building, Chang Gung University Date: December 19–20, 2025 — Workshop Overview — This workshop features two distinguished international scholars: Associate Professor Pudtan Phanthunane, Faculty of Business, Economics and Communications, Naresuan University, Thailand Assistant Professor Eunkyong (EK) Baek, International Design Institute, Hongik University, South Korea Together, they will lead participants through the core principles of medical design, integrating interdisciplinary collaboration with hands-on practice. The workshop will guide students to explore clinical needs and user pain points, apply design-thinking methods for problem analysis, develop concrete medical design concepts, and present feasible innovative solutions through prototyping and structured proposal methods. We are honored to welcome Dr. Eric Wieschaus, the 1995 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine ，and Dr. Trudi Schüpbach, also an AAAS Fellow, as our GIBM seminar speakers next Friday, December 5, 2025, at 3:10 PM. Dr. Wieschaus’s pioneering work on the genetic control of early embryonic development established fundamental principles of pattern formation and transformed modern developmental biology. His landmark embryonic lethal screen, conducted with Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, revealed the genetic logic that governs body-plan specification and identified many genes with essential roles in development. Pathways such as Wnt, Notch, and Hedgehog, now central to our understanding of developmental mechanisms, are ones we frequently encounter in the literature, in seminars, and in our own research. Over subsequent decades, the relevance of these pathways to human disease has been demonstrated by generations of scientists, and these discoveries continue to guide contemporary biomedical research.
